How these iconic duos met

and the magic they created

This piece doesn’t need an introduction. I’m going to start off with a bang:

1. Virgil & Kanye

Every time I sit down to write about Virgil, I have the warmest smile on my face. So, you can only imagine my joy now that I’m talking about Virgil and Kanye- an immensely talented and ambitious duo. These 2 met each other at the exact right time and didn’t let go. Virgil had his first meeting with Kanye in 2002 which was on the same day as his graduation. Like any sane person would, Virgil chose to go to the interview rather than getting his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Obviously, Kanye and Virgil started working together shortly after but the turning point in their relationship was an impactful internship with Fendi in Rome. It is absolutely mind-bending to picture 2 of the greatest creatives doing smut work as interns but it is true. Kanye talked about this in an interview with Charlamagne. The internship involved more Photoshop and cappuccinos than any actual involvement with clothes. They caused a lot of disruption and presented many wonderful ideas for $500 a month. Anyone who says that Kanye doesn’t qualify to be a designer or a part of the fashion world doesn’t know what they’re talking about. You don't get praises from Michael Burke unless you have real and definite potential.

Virgil became the creative director at Donda in 2010 so you know he played an important role in the making of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. From making Watch The Throne with Jay-Z to giving the world that memorable hug after Virgil’s debut runway show at Louis Vuitton, everything that these 2 did together was brilliant.

God, this show changed lives. Thank you, Virgil.

2. Basquiat & Andy Warhol

A tragic but beautiful pair- it is impossible to talk about these 2 without raising a few eyebrows. Their relationship was intimate but that didn’t stop them from loudly expressing their thoughts and experiences through their art. As resourceful as Andy Warhol’s diary entries were, it is honestly criminal to have the knowledge into his life like we do. First, we intruded into Anne Frank’s life and then, Andy Warhol. Almost feel ashamed but then again, this diary was full of gems so thank you Netflix for monopolising and broadcasting Andy’s wildest thoughts like that. Basquiat and Andy first ran into each other in 1982 at The Factory- Andy’s studio space. Later, Bruno Bischofberger, an art agent arranged a rendezvous for the two over lunch.

This is them at that lunch, according to Basquiat, who did this painting a few hours after said lunch.

3. NIGO & Pharrell

Jacob the Jeweler introduced Pharrell to NIGO aka “this guy in Japan.” NIGO was always very attracted towards Pharrell’s jewellery collection and so Jacob made sure to arrange a link-up between the two. Pharrell met NIGO in 2003 in his studio which was also NIGO’s archive collection that consisted of art pieces, arcades, vintage instruments, jewels and of course his BAPE possessions. And if you were wondering, no, NIGO doesn’t speak English. The two have only been conversing in their similar and impeccable taste for the last 2 decades and it’s working out perfectly for them.

The Billionaire Boys Club & ICECREAM put into perspective the artistic collaboration of Pharrell & NIGO. BBC was started in 2003 and today it is considered a brand of the highest order of originality and curation. Each piece that you see on here has been put up after a lot of thought and discussion between Pharrell and NIGO. BBC has branched out into ICECREAM, Bee Line and Billionaire Girls Clubs because just one label couldn’t suffice the creative these 2 have to offer.

Pharrell started having sushi because of NIGO, that right there tells you so much about their friendship.

Lots of people around the world make genius pieces of work everyday but something I have learned and observed is that when 2 brains come together willingly and with ambition, magic happens. On that note, I would like to tell you about “collective of cool shit.” It is a platform still in the works, created by 2 hungry kids. All I can say is that it is a piece of history in the making so you should watch out.
